Take a Self-Guided Tour of the Bridges of Bucks County

Nearby Bucks County, Pa., is the home of 12 picturesque covered bridges, with locations along the Delaware River and inside state parks. Take a self-guided Bucks County Covered Bridge driving tour, crossing the county’s remaining covered bridges with the help of a map or a mobile app courtesy of  Visit Bucks County.

The drive is split into two trips. The eastern half loop goes from Washington Crossing Historic Park to Perkasie, Pa. That drive, which takes about two and a half hours to complete, is around 58 miles.

The western loop from Perkasie back to Washington Crossing Historic Park takes an hour and a half, and is 38 miles. The tour is planned so that travelers can start at any one of the bridges.

Visitors are asked to first download the Covered Bridge Map. Also available to download is the Bucks County’s Covered Bridge Society’s new mobile app that provides self-guided tours to all 12 wooden structures. The map and bridge listings are all here.

Bridges on the tour include the Van Sandt Covered Bridge in New Hope, Cabin Run Covered Bridge in Pipersville, and bridges in Erwinna, Upper Black Eddy (shown above), Riegelsville, Quakertown, Perkasie, New Britain, and Newtown, all in Pennsylvania. The majority of the bridges, which have survived floods and weather conditions for 150 years, do not have areas to pull off and take photographs. For the most picturesque spots, the organization suggests heading to covered bridges in Perkasie or Tyler State Park.

Ten of the 12 bridges are on the National Register of Historic Places. The Bucks County Covered Bridge Society makes sure all are maintained and preserved, and has produced a video on the history of covered bridges available at buckscounty.org.

Enjoy the ride!
