Shakespeare Book Club: Reading the Bard Aloud, Virtually and In-Person

The Shakespeare Book Club unites Bard-ophiles and Shakespeare novices via fun, social, thought-provoking, and informative exploration of his plays. This fall, Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey has announced that the Shakespeare Book Club can now be experienced in-person at its Kean Theatre Factory or through Zoom for participants who wish to engage remotely.

Led by Director of Education, Brian B. Crowe, the program will take place on Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9:30 p.m., from October 6 through November 24. The plays that will be discussed include Julius Caesar, Antony & Cleopatra, and Caesar & Cleopatra.

These read-aloud sessions delve into the compelling characters, conflicts, and universal truths that have made Shakespeare the object of global fascination for over four centuries. The Club’s wide range of participants have repeatedly told them how much fun they have had in the class, and how much the class has increased their appreciation of and joy in seeing Shakespeare in performance.

The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey’s Book Club is supported by a grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the federal CARES Act.

Two to three sessions are devoted to each play. The first evening will be a guided reading through the first two acts with insights, anecdotal information, historical references, and fun facts provided by a member of The Shakespeare Theatre staff.

Discussions will be led by Brian B. Crowe, director of education and resident director. Guest speakers are Robert Cuccioli and Stephen Brown-Fried.
