Chestnut Fence Rail Birdhouse

$39.99

Prior to the 20th century, the American Chestnut tree populated nearly a quarter of some eastern forests, particularly in the Appalachians. With large diameters and a straight growth habit, the largely branch-free trunks made strong, rot-resistant lumber. The iconic split rail fences were traditionally made of the Chestnut lumber. Around 1900, chestnut blight was accidentally introduced to the US through imported Asian wood and wiped out over 99% of the American Chestnut population by 1950.

Today, as old split rail fences are abandoned or removed, much of the wood is reclaimed for modern uses. This birdhouse is crafted from triangular segments of antique chestnut railing, hollowed out and provided with a 1.25″ opening. Each has three screws in the face, allowing it to be removed for easy cleaning after birds leave the habitat. Includes a twig perch and 6″ chain for hanging. Handcrafted in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. Made in the USA.

Stoneware Chickadee Feeder

$29.99

Color: Butternut

Perfect for chickadees and all small songbirds that are heckled by larger birds! The seed is protected within a 1.25″ opening, keeping large birds (and squirrels) from feeding, while attracting the small birds. Individually hand thrown on the potter’s wheel in the mountains of North Carolina, this stoneware feeder is available in royal blue and butternut colors. Features a drainage hole, wooden perch and nylon cord hanger. The high-fired pottery process prevents the feeder from fading and is unaffected by harsh weather elements (including ice). Individually made in the USA.

Recycled Wine Bottle Wind Chime

Measuring 30″ in length, the Wine Bottle Wind Chime consists of reclaimed wine bottles of green, gold, brown and blue, sliced and melted down to form circular glass drops. The drops are accented with large multicolored glass beads and anchored with the melted bottom portions of the wine bottles. A Resilient woven filament suspends the glass from a one-of-a-kind natural driftwood top. The chime is designed for outdoors, but a sheltered location is recommended, where high winds and moving objects are at a minimum. Please note that each piece of driftwood is individually gathered, so the shape and size of the wood will vary. Handmade in the USA.

Patron Saint Retablo Plaque – San Pasqual

$24.99

Long a popular folk art form in colonial Spanish and Mexican culture, retablos are devotional paintings depicting divine icons and symbols, particularly Catholic patron saints. Chosen as representations and guardians of particular occupations and life situations, patron saints are often turned to in times of need or to express gratitude for a blessing. Displayed in homes to honor the saint or given as gifts of fortune and inspiration, retablos reflect a beloved historical tradition and cultural artistry.

Made by hand in New Mexico, this retablo plaque honors San Pasqual. An original design by the artist, her art print is decoupaged upon handcarved pine wood in traditional form. The reverse side includes a hole for hanging and a story of the saint’s life.

Saint Pasqual (San Pascual Baylon) was born to peasant parents and spent his youth as a shepherd. He carried a book and begged others to teach him to read. While slowly learning in the fields, his interests turned to religious works. He became a lay brother in a Franciscan order and was known to be a simple, humble, and contemplative man with many visions. He worked in the kitchen of the monastery and stories abound of divine assistance with his kitchen duties and his empty baskets miraculously filled so he could feed the poor. San Pasqual is recognized as the patron saint of cooks, kitchens, and shepherds. ‘I joyfully celebrate the food I am given. May it deeply nourish everyone I feed.’
