Princeton Children’s Book Author Maggie Edkins Willis at Labyrinth

Labyrinth Books welcomes Maggie Edkins Willis and Samira Iravani for an in-person event (with the option of virtual) on Sunday, June 12 at 2 p.m. Willis will discuss her debut middle grade graphic novel entitled Smaller Sister, which touches on the author’s own real-life experiences navigating confidence, body image, and the everlasting bond of sisterhood.

Attendees may choose to attend the event at Labyrinth Books on Nassau Street or by livestreaming at https://www.crowdcast.io/e/maggie-edkins-willis/register.

In the story of Smaller Sister, Lucy has always looked up to her big sister Olivia, even though the two are polar opposites. But when Olivia begins complaining about the way she looks, skipping meals, and not wanting to play with Lucy anymore, Lucy comes to realize that her sister is not just struggling with some growing pains — she’s developing an eating disorder.

While Lucy’s parents swoop in to help Olivia in her recovery, Lucy suddenly feels abandoned, unsure how to navigate the complicated world of adolescent friendships and self-image. In time, just like her big sister, Lucy also wants to shrink herself.

The relatable story does have a happy ending. With time, honesty and a lot of self-love, both sisters begin to heal themselves and each other. Soon enough, these two sisters are back to being the best of friends.

Willis designed and art directed books for seven years before embarking on a career of crafting her own stories. She now lives in Princeton with her husband, a football coach. When she is not writing or drawing, you can usually find her baking, reading, or running. Her debut novel, Smaller Sister, is based on her own experiences being the youngest of three sisters. Iravani is an associate art director with the Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group. When not creating book covers, she loves crafting stories with her mom and spending time with her dog, Valentine.
