Not everyone is lucky enough to live near a planetarium, but Central New Jersey residents can soar into space at the New Jersey State Museum’s Planetarium in Trenton. With its Ultra-High Resolution 8K projection system and 140 spacious, specially-designed reclined seats, your experience is sure to be a comfortable one.

Knowledgeable planetarium presenters will guide tours of New Jersey’s skies and beyond. Public show times are Tuesday through Friday at 2:30 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday at noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m.

Shows are roughly 50 minutes, with full-dome planetarium films preceded by live star talks presented by planetarium staff. Shows for visitors aged 8 and younger are roughly 30 minutes long with no pre-show star talk.

The public show schedule changes monthly and is listed in a Calendar of Events that denotes appropriate ages. On the last Saturday and Sunday of each month, a Spanish language show is available at 11 a.m.

In the current weekday show. To Space and Back, audiences go on an incredible journey from the far reaches of our known universe to our own planet. It is a story of human ingenuity and incredible engineering, describing how the technology that transports us through space is paving the way for devices and applications (apps) we use every day.

Ticket prices are: Children 2 and under, free; children 3 to 12, $5; ages 13 and up, $10; veterans, seniors, and students, $9; groups of 15 or more, $5 per person; and Families First Card or eWIC Card holders, up to four tickets free.

Advanced ticket sales are not available; the box office opens 30 minutes before the first show.

To schedule a school or community group visit to the planetarium, call 609.292.1382 or email njsm.reservations@sos.nj.gov

The planetarium gives children free gifts on their birthdays. When buying tickets at the box office, give the child’s first name. The planetarium will announce the birthday before the show. If you call or email three or more business days in advance, the planetarium will add a banner to the dome. To add the banner, contact Jacob.Hamer@sos.nj.gov.
