Library Offers Program on “World Changer” Jim Henson
Children in Pre-K to third grade can be inspired by a reading of I Am Jim Henson by author Brad Meltzer at Princeton Public Library on Tuesday, June 4 at 3 p.m. in the Story Room. Participants will receive a free copy of the book to take home and can engage in a fun, hands-on activity. A reading of the book in Spanish will take place at 4 p.m.
The event is co-presented by The NJ4S Mercer Hub, which provides universal prevention programs that promote healthy living and overall wellness.
The book is part of the bestselling picture book series Ordinary People Change the World, which focuses on heroes’ traits that kids can aspire to in order to live heroically themselves. Henson, for example, was always dreaming up something new, and expressing his belief in the goodness of people, according to the publisher, Rocky Pond Books. He used his talents in performing, and sense of humor, to help create two of the most beloved programs in television history, The Muppet Show and Sesame Street, and “showed the world that there’s nothing more beautiful than imagination, especially when it’s accompanied by laughter and kindness.”
According to Library School Journal, the text, written as if narrated by Henson, “presents his life story as if he were still alive, but as a child version of himself (complete with a beard!). The factual information provided is solid, as is the back matter, which includes a time line of Henson’s life and a few photographs.” The book is illustrated by Christopher Eliopoulos.
Meltzer grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., and graduated from the University of Michigan and Columbia Law School. His first published book was The Tenth Justice. His other works include Dead Even, The First Counsel, The Millionaires, The Book of Fate, The Zero Game, The Inner Circle, and The Fifth Assassin. He is the Eisner Award-winning author of the critically acclaimed comic book Justice League of America, and wrote the nonfiction books Heroes for My Son and Heroes for My Daughter. His titles also include I Am Abraham Lincoln, I Am Amelia Earhart, I am Rosa Parks, I Am George Washington, and I Am Jane Goodall.
