Jersey Fresh Produce in Season at Trenton Farmers Market

Juicy corn, sweet blueberries, succulent tomatoes, and crunchy cucumbers are among other produce and homemade breads, pies, salads, and specialty stands at the Trenton Farmers Market in Lawrence Township.

A farmer-owned cooperative since 1939, the market is New Jersey’s oldest continuously running farmers market. Located on Spruce Street since 1948, it also carries Amish meats and poultry, kielbasa, cheese, and barbecued rotisserie chicken as well as homemade entrees at vendors such as Pulaski Meats, which specializes in Polish, German, Hungarian, Ukrainian, and Russian food items.

In the early 1900s, a group of farmers came by horse and carriage to Trenton to sell their produce near the “Trenton Makes” bridge, the thoroughfare between New York and Philadelphia. In 1939, in anticipation of the building of Route 29, the Trenton Market Growers Cooperative Association was formed, and property was purchased in Lawrence Township. What began with three parallel buildings in 1948 became the current cross shape by cutting the center building in half and affixing it to the eastern building in 1968, according to the market website. Outdoor stalls gave way to an indoor facility with overhead doors to give the market its open, outdoor look.

The seven farms in the marketplace are members of the Farmer Cooperative and several serve as board members. They include Cedarville Farm, Corner Copia Farms, Cranberry Hall Farm, Pineland Farms, Russo’s Fruit and Vegetable Farm, Terhune Orchards, and Zell’s Farm.

The Trenton Farmers Market was voted No. 1 in Mercer County, No. 2 in New Jersey, No. 3 in Northeast Region, and No. 20 nationwide by the American Farmland Trust 2023-24 Farmers Market Survey; and was voted Best Farmers Market in the Town Topics newspaper Readers’ Choice Awards, 2023-24.
