Celebrate Pancake Week at Princeton’s Legendary Pancake House

By Sarah Emily Gilbert

When a restaurant’s domain name is www.pancakes.com, you know they don’t mess around when it comes to flapjacks. Such is the case for Princeton’s legendary pancake house, PJ’s. It’s not uncommon to see a line of people outside the doors of 154 Nassau Street on a weekend morning, eagerly awaiting breakfast or brunch. While the local hotspot offers everything from salads to pasta, it’s their pancakes that truly draw the crowds (and the fact that you can write on their tabletops). In fact, PJ’s popularity led to the opening of a second location at Windsor Plaza in Princeton Junction.   Princeton Magazine celebrates “Pancake Week” by featuring some of the decadent pancakes PJ’s Pancake House has to offer. We also highly recommend blasting Jack Johnson’s “Banana Pancakes” and indulging in some buttery, syrupy goodness from Princeton’s breakfast mecca after reading this article. more

The co-owner of Small World Coffee shares the things that make her world go round.

By Sarah Emily Gilbert

web 2There is something unique about Jessica Durrie’s list of 10 favorite things: It doesn’t include any “things.” Instead, Durrie’s list features personal experiences, places, and rituals that have deep meaning in her life.

Similarly, her famed coffee shop serves expertly roasted and brewed coffee, but it goes far beyond any single “thing” on its menu. Like Durrie, Small World Coffee sets itself apart with its intangible assets.   The shop’s staff always serves up something delightful, whether it is quirky charisma or a Mexican hot chocolate. The local artwork on its walls speaks to Small World’s deep-rooted connection to the community. And perhaps most noticeably, the Princeton hotspot offers carefree vibes (filled with the aroma of coffee) that always make you feel at home.

Since 1993, co-owners of Small World Coffee, Brant Cosaboom and Jessica Durrie, have been bringing something special to Princeton, and it goes far beyond their delicious caffeinated drinks. Below, Durrie shares the 10 “things” that make her small world go round. more

Most people wouldn’t expect a former educator to establish a distillery, but for Randy Pratt, there was a connection between the two worlds.

By Sarah Emily Gilbert

You could say that Randy Pratt was born with the will to learn. After many years vested in education as a teacher, administrator, and instructor on the collegiate level, he was well equipped to overcome the learning curve that came with opening up a distillery. Although he was a newbie to the distilling industry, Pratt was a veteran in the classroom. So, he signed up for several workshops and a distilling class at Michigan State University until he was ready to open up Great Notch Distillery in Bergen County.

“Every part of [launching Great Notch] has been a learning experience. Being a one-man show, you get to learn all aspects of the business and take the bumps and bruises that go with it…the paperwork itself is daunting. I have terrific friends and family who pitch in when I need help. It certainly has been a challenge. One that I’m up to conquering.” more

From Bob Dylan’s music to a quality espresso, Carlo’s list of favorite things proves that the Momo brothers really do have good taste

By Sarah Emily Gilbert

Terra Momo Bread Company, Teresa Caffe, Mediterra, Eno Terra…these are a few of my favorite things, and I know I’m not alone in my list. You’d be hard pressed to find a Princetonian that objects to dining at one of Terra Momo Restaurant Group’s eateries. After all, who doesn’t appreciate fresh ingredients, inventive cuisine, and unmatched hospitality? There’s something special about eating pasta next to Teresa’s wood-fired oven, enjoying a glass of Chilean wine under the vaulted ceilings of Eno Terra, or being greeted by Franco’s thick Italian accent at Mediterra.

As soon as I received Carlo Momo’s list of ten favorite things, I uncovered what that “something” was that makes me and so many others gravitate towards the Terra Momo restaurants: authenticity. Carlo has managed to turn his favorite things into his career by infusing his love of food, family, and the arts into each of the Terra Momo restaurants. As a result, everything from the staff to the ingredients used in each dish is as authentic as the brothers behind the Momo name. more

You could say the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn and Tavern has withstood the test of time – more specifically, over two centuries worth of time.  Constructed in 1796 as a residential home, the beautiful Dutch Colonial became a tavern in 1890, until it underwent a seven-month, $1.5 million renovation in 2009 in order to become the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn and Tavern. On the National Register of Historic Places, it’s become a coveted North Jersey landmark and a highly sought after destination for fine dining and events. Under the direction of Executive Chef Hank Barrett, the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn offers a diverse array of flavorful tavern fare featuring seasonal ingredients.  more
