Bucks County Driving Excursion Features Old Stone Houses
Those who want to go on an excursion, but want to stay in the warmth of a car in the colder weather, can find a few driving tours on visitbuckscounty.com. One takes participants by many historic stone houses that are now private homes, starting New Hope, Pa., and ending in Doylestown, Pa.
The driving tour includes the John Chapman House/London Purchase Farm at 1310 Eagle Road in Upper Makefield Township, Pa. The 1735 house served as a meeting place for Henry Knox and Alexander Hamilton, and the historic significance earned it a spot on the National Register of Historic Places, as did the history of several other of the residences.
The tour also includes the 1807 Gershom Craft House/Pomona Farm, 105 Barnsley Avenue, Morrisville, Pa.; the John Lacey Homestead, 709 Forest Grove Road, Wycombe, Pa., home of the Revolutionary War general John Lacey; and Liberty Hall, 1237 West Broad Street in Quakertown, Pa. Built in 1772, it is the first permanent residence built in Quakertown, where the Liberty Bell was hidden for a time in 1777.
A few additional homes complete the tour. More information about the houses, and a driving map, are available here.
